The character of Fort William
The town centre runs along a pedestrianised High Street parallel to the loch, with the railway station and the main car parks close by. Glen Nevis, just south of the town, narrows to a single road with limited passing space near its head, busiest at the start and end of the walking day. The A82 north and south of the town is the main artery, and it carries genuinely mixed traffic, from heavy goods vehicles to tourist coaches, at any time of year.
- The High Street is pedestrianised — cars wait at the car parks either side of it.
- Glen Nevis pickups near the head of the glen depend on the single-track road being clear.
- Early starts for Ben Nevis are planned around daylight and weather rather than a fixed time.
- Jacobite train departures create a predictable surge at the station twice a day in season.
