The character of Oban
The town centre curves around the bay in a single main street, with the ferry terminal, the railway station and the bus stances all within a short walk of each other. McCaig's Tower and the streets climbing the hill above are steep and narrow, better suited to a compact car than a large one. Beyond the town, the A85 reverts quickly to a single-carriageway road through genuinely remote country, and journey times depend on the road far more than on traffic.
- The ferry terminal, railway station and bus stances sit within a short walk of each other.
- Streets near McCaig's Tower are narrow — a saloon fits more easily than a large SUV.
- Ferry-connected pickups build in a margin against CalMac's published sailing time.
- Touring days through Argyll are paced around single-track roads rather than a motorway schedule.
