The character of Inverness
The centre is compact and mostly walkable, with the castle esplanade and the river islands closed to through traffic. Academy Street and the one-way system around the bus and rail stations carry most of the city's flow, and the Kessock Bridge crossing to the Black Isle is the main pinch point heading north. Beyond the city the roads open out quickly, though several routes west and south revert to single track with passing places.
- The castle esplanade and river islands are pedestrian only — cars wait on Bridge Street or Castle Road.
- Academy Street and the station forecourt are the busiest kerbside points at commuter times.
- Day tours to Loch Ness are planned with fuel and comfort stops built into the route.
- Winter bookings on the A9 or A82 carry extra time for weather and road conditions.
