Where the car waits in W1
Park Lane carries red route controls on both carriageways, so nothing stops on it. Arrivals at the Park Lane hotels are taken on their own forecourts, entered from the southbound side and left the same way. Everywhere else in the district runs on single yellow lines, resident permit bays and short loading windows, each with its own plated hours. The signage changes street by street and, in a few places, house by house.
Berkeley Square circulates one way around its plane trees, which means an address on one side cannot be reached by doubling back from the other. The chauffeur either enters on the correct side or holds in Bruton Place until called forward. Bruton Street, Davies Street and Berkeley Street will all take a car briefly outside their loading windows, and all three are enforced closely.
Mount Street, Carlos Place and South Audley Street are narrow enough that one stationary car alters the flow of an entire block. The practice is to hold nearby, usually on Farm Street or Hill Street, and to bring the car forward on a message once you are at the door. Ninety seconds of waiting indoors is better than ten minutes of a car obstructing a residential terrace.
