The character of Chelmsford
The centre around the High Street and Bond Street is largely pedestrianised, with the cathedral precinct kept quiet and traffic-free. Cars hold on the surrounding streets or in the multi-storey car parks rather than at the cathedral gates. Hylands Park, used for outdoor events through the summer, has its own access road that becomes tightly managed on festival and show weekends, requiring a different approach entirely from a normal-day pickup.
- The High Street and cathedral precinct are pedestrian priority — the car holds nearby.
- Hylands Park event days use a separate managed access road, agreed before the day.
- The Army and Navy roundabout is avoided on the return route wherever possible.
- Station pickups use the short-stay bay outside the main entrance.
