The character of Stirling
The old town climbs steeply from the railway station to the castle esplanade, with narrow streets and limited turning space near the top. The esplanade itself is pedestrian and closed to casual parking, so cars for castle visits wait lower down at the esplanade car park. The M9/M80 interchange south of the city is the real hinge point for any onward journey, and traffic there can back up well before the roundabouts themselves.
- The castle esplanade is pedestrian only — cars wait at the esplanade car park below.
- Old-town streets near the castle are narrow; an MPV needs more room to turn than a saloon.
- Cars hold clear of the M9/M80 interchange when it is busy and time the approach around it.
- University pickups at Bridge of Allan use the main campus road rather than internal courts.
