Approaches: the M1, the M69 and the A46 bypass
Junction 21 of the M1 is where the M69 ends and the A5460 begins, and it is the busiest gateway to the city. Narborough Road runs from there to the centre in ten to twenty minutes depending on the hour. Junction 21A gives access to the A46 for the north and east.
The A46 Western Bypass carries traffic around the city towards Newark and the A1, and it is usually the better line for anything on the eastern side. The A563 outer ring road links the radial routes and saves a great deal of time on cross-city journeys.
Coventry is around half an hour away on the M69 and Birmingham an hour by the M6 beyond it. Nottingham is thirty to forty-five minutes north. The city is therefore a practical base for a Midlands day that touches three or four addresses.
- Junction 21 used for the western approach, 21A for the north and east
- Outer ring road preferred for cross-city legs
- Midlands multi-stop days built around the M69 and M1
