Old Market Square, the Lace Market and the tram
The square is pedestrianised and framed by the Council House, so collections for anything on it are made from South Parade, King Street or Queen Street depending on which side of the building you are leaving. The distinction sounds pedantic and saves a genuine five minutes in the rain.
Tram lines cross the centre with their own priority, and several streets that look like ordinary roads carry trams and nothing else. A driver unfamiliar with the layout will take a wrong turn here; a driver who works the city regularly will not.
In the Lace Market, High Pavement and Stoney Street are the practical addresses, with holding on Fletcher Gate or Broadway. The gradient down towards the canal is steeper than it appears on a map, so we choose the upper side of a building when there is luggage.
- Square collections made from the correct side of the Council House
- Tram-only streets identified before the route is set
- Upper-side set-down chosen in the Lace Market where cases are involved
