Driving the lanes properly
Between the villages the roads are single track with passing places, high dry-stone walls and hedges that block sightlines completely. Around Bibury, the Barringtons, the Slaughters and Guiting Power there is no realistic way to make up time, and trying to is unpleasant for everyone in the car.
Fords, tractors, horse riders and cyclists are all normal on these roads. So are unlit lanes after dark, which is the single biggest reason rural evening journeys run late for visitors driving themselves. A chauffeur who knows the route drives it at the same pace at ten at night as at ten in the morning.
In winter the high ground around Stow, Broadway Tower and the Cleeve Hill road holds ice long after the main roads have cleared. We plan around that rather than discover it, and where conditions warrant it we will suggest a different vehicle before the day rather than on it.
