The New Town grid, and where a car can stop
The Georgian grid looks generous and behaves otherwise. George Street has restricted stopping, Princes Street is effectively closed to through traffic, and Queen Street runs one way. The usable holding streets are the mews and lanes behind the main terraces: Young Street, Hill Street and the north side of Charlotte Square among them.
Townhouse hotels and offices here often have steps up to a front door and no forecourt at all. Chauffeurs come to the pavement, take the cases and walk them, which is quicker than any attempt to bring a vehicle closer.
Setting down on the Royal Mile is possible in places and unwise in most. For the Castle, the esplanade approach is controlled; for Holyrood, the lower end of Canongate works well. We agree which end of the hill you are starting from before the journey is planned.
- Mews and side streets used for holding rather than main terraces
- Cases carried to the door where there is no forecourt
- Old Town collections set at the top or the bottom of the hill
