The M1, the Parkway and the way into town
Junction 33 and the Sheffield Parkway form the main gate to the city. Ten to fifteen minutes covers the run into the centre outside peak hours, and it remains reliable for most of the day. Junction 34 serves Meadowhall and the Tinsley corridor, and it is the one that congests.
The M18 leaves the M1 north of the city for the Humber ports and the A1(M) beyond. Southwards, Chesterfield is twenty minutes and Nottingham about an hour. Leeds is thirty-five to fifty minutes north on the M1, which makes a two-city day entirely reasonable.
Inside the ring road the layout is a mix of dual carriageway and steep Victorian streets, and the tram network crosses the centre at several points with its own priorities. Chauffeurs plan the last half mile as carefully as the first thirty.
- Junction 33 and the Parkway used as the standard approach
- Junction 34 avoided at peak times where the destination allows
- Tram priorities allowed for on the final approach
