The A1 rather than the M6
You can drive between London and Edinburgh two ways. On the east side, the M1, A1(M) and A1 take you through Yorkshire and Northumberland. Out west, you head up the M6 and M74, crossing Cumbria and Lanarkshire.
If you're heading for central Edinburgh, the eastern route is shorter, usually quicker, and keeps you off the Birmingham stretch of the M6 altogether. We take it as standard for this trip unless the conditions on the day suggest otherwise.
Going west makes sense if Glasgow is part of the trip too, if the A1 is shut north of Newcastle, or on a winter's day when the weather on the coast at Berwick is worse than the Cumbrian option.
