The character of Dumfries
The town centre sits either side of the Nith, with Devorgilla Bridge and the Whitesands forming the historic crossing point, and the High Street mostly pedestrianised through its central stretch. The Crichton campus, on the southern edge, is spacious and easy for a car to approach directly. Beyond the town, the A75 and A76 open out quickly into genuinely rural roads, and driving conditions change with the weather more than with the traffic.
- The High Street is pedestrianised through its central stretch — cars wait on the surrounding streets.
- The Crichton campus is spacious, allowing direct kerbside access to most buildings.
- Long-distance bookings toward Cairnryan or the border build in a wider time margin for rural roads.
- Burns heritage sites in the town centre are close enough to combine into one walking loop.
