The three roads that make up the route
Leg one takes the M1 from the North Circular up to Catthorpe, about eighty miles of managed motorway. Between junctions 10 and 16 you'll often meet variable speed limits. They lose you minutes, not hours, and a chauffeur who sees them coming keeps a steadier average speed than one who simply responds as they appear.
The M6 northbound picks up the route at Catthorpe Interchange. Whether your journey ends up at the quick or the slow end of its range is settled on this stretch. After that, the motorway carries on past Birmingham, Stoke-on-Trent and Knutsford, and then the M56 heads east into the city.
For central addresses, the last part runs along the M56 to junction 3 and then the A5103 Princess Parkway; for anywhere east of Deansgate, it's the M60 and the A57(M) Mancunian Way instead. Neither approach is long. Only in the evening peak does either get awkward.
