The character of Saffron Walden
The market square and the streets radiating from it are narrow, some cobbled, with limited turning space for anything larger than a saloon. Cars generally hold on the wider roads just outside the historic core, such as the London Road, and walk in for a door collection where the street will not allow a car to wait. Audley End station, the nearest rail link, sits well outside the town and needs its own separate timing.
- Narrow streets around the market square suit a saloon far better than a larger car.
- The car holds on London Road when the historic core cannot take a vehicle.
- Audley End station is two miles out and timed as a separate leg.
- Audley End House visitor days bring extra traffic on the B1383.
