The character of Wakefield
The one-way system around Northgate and Kirkgate takes a little local knowledge, and the cathedral precinct is pedestrianised, so cars wait on Wood Street or Bank Street and come to the door on request. Westgate has short loading bays that fill quickly during the working day. The Chantry Chapel on Wakefield Bridge marks the old crossing point of the Calder and narrows traffic on the approach from the south.
- Cars hold on Wood Street or Bank Street near the cathedral and move to the door on request.
- Westgate loading bays are used briefly and only when clear of restrictions.
- Market days narrow the Bull Ring on Thursdays and Fridays.
- M1 through-traffic collections use a fixed point off Ings Road to avoid the one-way system.
