The character of Middlesbrough
The centre runs on a fairly tight one-way system around Centre Square and the Cleveland Centre, with Albert Road and Corporation Road carrying most through-traffic. The Newport and Tees flyovers keep the A66 fast but funnel heavily at the approach to the town centre in the evening peak. Cars generally hold on a side street near Centre Square or the Riverside car parks, since the pedestrianised shopping streets do not allow standing.
- Cars hold on a side street near Centre Square rather than in the pedestrianised shopping area.
- Match days close the streets immediately around the Riverside Stadium from about an hour before kick-off.
- The Newport and Tees flyovers keep the A66 fast but the town-centre approach slows sharply at peak times.
- Teesside University pickups use the campus car parks rather than the main road frontage.
