The character of Hastings
The Old Town's lanes, tucked between the East Hill and West Hill cliffs, are narrow, cobbled in places and largely pedestrian-priority, so a car waits on the wider roads at either end rather than inside them. The seafront itself, along the Stade and the pier approach, is more open. The two funicular cliff railways, among the oldest of their kind, are a genuine curiosity but have no bearing on vehicle access, which stays at street level.
- The Old Town's cobbled lanes are largely pedestrian-priority; the car holds on the wider roads at either end.
- The Stade and seafront near the pier allow a more open pickup than the lanes above.
- The two cliff railways carry passengers, not vehicles — road access stays at sea level.
- Battle Abbey and 1066 Country sites are a separate drive inland, not within Hastings itself.
