The character of Gloucester
Southgate Street and the approach to the Cross carry a one-way flow that catches drivers unfamiliar with the switchback into Westgate. Gloucester Docks is cobbled and largely pedestrianised around the Quays, so cars wait on Commercial Road rather than among the warehouses. The Cathedral precinct restricts vehicle access almost entirely, and Kingsholm's match-day closures reshape the northern approach on a Friday evening.
- The Cathedral precinct is largely closed to cars — pickups meet on College Green or nearby.
- Gloucester Docks is cobbled and mostly pedestrianised; the car waits on Commercial Road.
- Kingsholm match days close the surrounding streets from around ninety minutes before kick-off.
- The Air Balloon roundabout on the A417 is the usual pinch point toward Cirencester and beyond.
