The character of Colchester
The High Street and the area around Colchester Castle are pedestrian priority for much of the day, so cars hold on Head Street or in the nearby multi-storeys instead. The Dutch Quarter's narrow lanes are attractive but unsuited to waiting traffic. Outside the walls the town opens out considerably, with wide roads serving the garrison and the retail parks, and the A12 running close enough to the northern edge that access from most of the town is quick.
- The High Street and castle area are pedestrian priority — the car holds on Head Street.
- Garrison pickups follow military site access rules confirmed ahead of the day.
- University of Essex collections at Wivenhoe use the campus drop-off point, not the town centre.
- The northern bypass is used ahead of the old road through the centre wherever the route allows.
