The character of Ambleside
The centre is narrow and part-pedestrianised around the market cross, with Bridge House and the streets nearby busiest by far in the middle of the day. Waterhead, at the southern edge where the steamers dock, has more room and suits a collection better than the town centre proper. Kirkstone Pass, the road north to Patterdale and Ullswater, is genuinely steep and narrow, and we treat it with real caution in winter.
- The centre around the market cross and Bridge House is part-pedestrianised.
- Waterhead has more room than the centre and suits a scheduled collection.
- Kirkstone Pass can close entirely in snow or ice; a road we treat with caution.
- There is no railway station in Ambleside itself; Windermere is the nearest.
