The character of Windermere
Bowness Bay, where the piers and the steamer launches sit, is genuinely tight in summer, with pedestrians, cyclists and cars sharing the same narrow lanes down to the water. The town above is calmer and easier to hold a car in. The A591 in and out is single carriageway for long stretches, and it slows to a crawl on fine summer weekends when the whole valley is moving at once.
