The character of Wells
Cathedral Green and the approach to the West Front are largely pedestrianised, and Vicars' Close, reputedly the oldest continuously occupied residential street in Europe, has no vehicle access at all. The Market Place nearby has short-stay parking, and the roads out toward the Mendip Hills and Cheddar Gorge narrow quickly once clear of the city centre.
- Vicars' Close has no vehicle access at all — pickups meet at Cathedral Green instead.
- Cathedral Green itself is largely pedestrianised; the car waits at a nearby agreed point.
- Wells has no railway station — road transfers to Bristol are the practical default.
- Bristol's Clean Air Zone is accounted for whenever a Wells journey continues into the city.
