The character of South Shields
Ocean Road and the seafront carry heavy footfall on warm weekends, with parking along the front filling early. Mill Dam and the older harbour streets are narrower and more mixed with local traffic. Cars generally hold on a side street off Ocean Road or near the Word building rather than directly on the seafront, moving to the door once you confirm. The Tyne Tunnel approach roads back up quickly at the evening peak.
- Cars hold on a side street off Ocean Road rather than directly on the seafront in summer.
- Tyne Tunnel maintenance closures push all traffic onto the Tyne Bridge; we build in extra time when scheduled.
- The Word and Arbeia Roman Fort collections use the nearby car park rather than a kerbside wait.
- Ferry-linked journeys to North Shields are timed to the crossing rather than a fixed road estimate.
