Exhibition Road and its shared surface
The road was rebuilt as a level, kerb-free street between the Cromwell Road and Kensington Gore, with granite paving carried from building line to building line. Traffic still runs along it, but speeds are low and stopping is confined to the marked bays. A car standing outside a bay obstructs both the carriageway and the pedestrian flow at the same time.
For museum arrivals the practical points are the southern end near the station, the bays partway along, and Prince Consort Road at the top. Which one is used depends on the time of day and on whether a coach party is unloading, which can occupy the space entirely for ten minutes at a stretch.
Cromwell Road, crossing the southern end, is a red route with no stopping at any time. It is a route through the district rather than a place to collect from, and every SW7 pickup is therefore taken from a side street or from a marked bay off the main road.
- Exhibition Road: single surface, stopping only in marked bays
- Cromwell Road: red route, no stopping at any time
- Coach unloading can occupy bays for ten minutes at a time
- Side-street alternatives on Thurloe Place and Harrington Road
