Working the High Street
Kensington High Street has very little usable kerb during trading hours. Bus lanes run along much of it, the loading bays turn over constantly, and the crossings mean a stationary car blocks more than its own length. Collections are taken instead from Derry Street, Wrights Lane, Young Street or Kensington Court, all of which meet the High Street within fifty metres of the main frontages.
Kensington Church Street climbs north towards Notting Hill Gate between antique dealers and galleries, and is narrow throughout with limited stopping. For deliveries or collections from the shops there the workable positions are Holland Street, Vicarage Gate and Peel Street rather than the main run of the hill.
The hotels on the High Street and at Kensington Court have their own set-down arrangements, and where a forecourt exists the car uses it. Where one does not, arrivals are handled on the side street and the chauffeur carries the cases through. Luggage is not wheeled along the main pavement in trading hours when a quieter route exists.
