The character of Portsmouth
Old Portsmouth and the dockyard area are dense with security perimeters, gate checks and one-way loops around the naval base, so a car cannot simply wait at the kerb near a ferry berth or a warship attraction. Gunwharf Quays has its own multi-storey parking rather than street pickup. Southsea, by contrast, is open and easy, with wide seafront roads and straightforward loading outside the hotels along Clarence Parade.
- Ferry terminal drop-offs are timed to check-in rather than sailing time, which is earlier than most passengers expect.
- Gunwharf Quays uses its own car park; there is no street-level kerb pickup.
- Dockyard and naval base addresses require gate clearance, arranged with your confirmation details.
- Southsea seafront hotels have straightforward kerbside loading along Clarence Parade.
