The character of Newbury
Newbury's town centre sits either side of the Kennet and Avon Canal, with a compact, largely one-way street pattern around the Market Place. The wider road network is dominated by the A34's north-south flow and the M4's east-west one, meeting just north of the town in a junction that can back up badly on a big race day. Away from race days, the centre itself is easy to work.
- Race-day drop-offs are timed against the specific meeting and enclosure gate you hold tickets for.
- The Market Place area runs a compact one-way system — the car holds nearby, not on it.
- Newbury Racecourse station serves the course directly on major race days.
- The M4/A34 interchange is watched closely; the A339 is our usual alternative when it is heavy.
