The grid and its perimeter
Four roads bound the district and all four do the practical work. Regent Street to the west, Oxford Street to the north, Charing Cross Road to the east and Shaftesbury Avenue to the south. Inside them, Wardour Street and Dean Street run north to south and carry most of what moves; Brewer Street, Broadwick Street and Old Compton Street cross them.
Almost every internal street is one-way, and several change direction partway along. A missed turn cannot be corrected quickly, which is why the chauffeur approaches from a fixed direction agreed with the address rather than following whatever line a navigation system suggests at the time.
Carnaby Street and the streets around it are pedestrian, as are sections of the eastern grid at various hours. Golden Square, Soho Square and Great Marlborough Street all give a car somewhere to stand briefly, and each is within three minutes of most Soho doors.
- Perimeter roads: Regent Street, Oxford Street, Charing Cross Road, Shaftesbury Avenue
- One-way internal streets, several changing direction partway
- Standing points: Golden Square, Soho Square, Great Marlborough Street
- Oxford Street closed to private cars, seven in the morning to seven at night
