Down the M3
The route leaves London on the A316 or the M4 and joins the M3 at Sunbury. Junctions 2 to 4A carry the Bagshot and Camberley commuter flow, and that section is the only reliably slow part of the outbound run before nine in the morning.
From Fleet the motorway opens up. Basingstoke passes at junction 6 and Winchester at junction 9, where the road drops through the Twyford Down cutting. It is a fast, exposed stretch and sidewinds there are noticeable in a taller vehicle.
The M3 ends at junction 14 and feeds the M27. Junction 3 serves the western docks and the city; junction 5 serves Southampton Airport and the northern suburbs. Choosing correctly matters more here than anywhere else on the route.
