The Piazza and the streets that serve it
Six streets do the work of the square. Southampton Street and Henrietta Street come up from the Strand, King Street and Floral Street run across the northern side, and Wellington Street and Russell Street handle the eastern approach. Each takes a car briefly, none takes one for long, and all of them are busy with pedestrians who assume they have priority.
The market building itself, the London Transport Museum and St Paul's Church are all reached on foot from those streets. For a client with luggage the best of them is usually Henrietta Street, which is wide enough for a car to stand while cases come out and close enough that nothing is carried far.
Servicing hours bring lorries into the Piazza early in the morning and again late at night, and the barriers move with them. A collection at seven in the morning therefore uses a different street to a collection at seven in the evening, and the chauffeur checks which applies before setting out.
