The character of Clerkenwell
Clerkenwell Road and St John Street carry the main traffic; Clerkenwell Green and the lanes around Jerusalem Passage do not, and are effectively pedestrian by day. Charterhouse Square keeps its gates locked to through traffic, and Exmouth Market's stalls close the street to cars at lunchtime. Cars generally hold on Rosebery Avenue or Farringdon Road and move in only when called, since kerbside space near the Green disappears within minutes.
- Clerkenwell Green and Jerusalem Passage are pedestrian by day — the car holds on Rosebery Avenue.
- Exmouth Market closes to traffic at lunchtime for the stalls; we route around via Rosebery Avenue.
- Charterhouse Square is gated to through traffic — we wait at the nearest open access point.
- Sadler's Wells curtain-down brings a short, sharp queue on Rosebery Avenue around ten.
