The character of Woolwich
The centre is dense and largely pedestrianised around Powis Street and General Gordon Square, so cars work the surrounding grid rather than the shopping streets themselves. Beresford Square, next to the old Royal Arsenal gate, gets congested on market days. Riverside developments have private forecourts with clear set-down bays, but older terraces nearby have none, and the approach to the ferry slipway backs up whenever a sailing has just left.
- Powis Street and General Gordon Square are pedestrianised — the car waits on a side road nearby.
- Royal Arsenal riverside blocks have private forecourts with marked set-down bays.
- The ferry slipway approach queues after each sailing — we avoid it at the wrong moment.
- ULEZ applies across the borough and is accounted for in the quotation.
