The character of Exeter
The Cathedral Green and the lanes around the High Street carry pedestrian priority through much of the day, and the one-way system around South Street and Fore Street needs planning in advance. Exeter Quay, cobbled and largely pedestrianised, is reached more easily on foot than by car. The ring road and the approaches from the M5 are wide and straightforward by comparison.

- The M5 through Exeter is the usual constraint on any onward journey west.
- Summer holiday weekends bring a marked build-up on the M5 and A30 through the city.
