The character of Dartford
Dartford town centre itself is compact, with the historic High Street now largely pedestrianised and the ring road handling through traffic. Bluewater, a few miles east in Greenhithe, is an entirely separate destination with its own vast car parks. The crossing itself is a controlled toll road rather than a place to stop, and traffic there is managed by variable messaging that changes lane allocation through the day.
- The Dartford Crossing is a controlled toll road — there is no stopping on the bridge or in the tunnels.
- Bluewater has its own extensive car parks, entirely separate from Dartford town centre.
- The pedestrianised High Street means the car waits on the surrounding ring road.
- Crossing delays can appear with little warning; we monitor conditions before setting off.
